Update – Links – Love – 5

Posted on June 28th, 2009 by Donace in For Shame and Fame

Well I can’t say its great to be back from holiday…as who can truly say they WANT to leave Dubai.

Though as always the blogosphere did not stand still and some great content has been out there. So here is a quick review of some posts I found very useful!

First came earth

Earth; the symbol of growth of life itself and its great to see that there are great people out there so firstly I would like to thank Jeff from Perishable Press for his great Guest post on the new no-follow drama that hit the SEO world (implications also considered at semoz) and would urge you to read up his follow up article on how you can utilize JS so to create external links making them invisible to Search Engines. I also suggest you preorder a new book he has co-authored you will not regret it!

I would also like to extend my thanks to Kim from (Anti) Social Development who graced these hollow walls with a great post and must read for people considering doing online freelance work and if you need any freelance work done give her a shout.

Then came Air

Michael Jackson

There has been a lot of hotair around the death of Michael Jackson and how it was a great loss. Yes I would admit his songs were great and as a musical genius he will be missed by the world. Though interestingly Mitch has found out Micheal Jackson death resulted in more online damage then 9/11 did!

Google themselves said:

“The spike in searches related to Michael Jackson was so big that Google News initially mistook it for an automated attack. As a result, for about 25 minutes yesterday, when some people searched Google News they saw a “We’re sorry” page before finding the articles they were looking for.”Source

From a SEO point this was a truly … eye opening experience and I would urge you to have a look at semoz’s analysis of Jackson’s death.

Water flows both quick and slow

Speed Plugins

One downside of Dubai was that due to the content filter websites were ‘extra’ slow and therefore my site seemed waaaaay to slow to me so after a bit of digging I installed these plugins to help me out:

WP Optimize – What this does is optimize your database, it may not seem to do much but you see a difference in response time.

DB Cache – Now I dont use a caching plugin (they just seem to break this site!) however this seemed to work wonders; It reduced database calls from the front page from 47 to 22. That is a 50%+ benefit!! (I used debug-queries plugin to check…its also useful to find those bad sql queries). [If your having consistent high CPU issues I suggest you have a quick look at Michael Latest series]

Use Google Libraries – What this does is instead of loading JS such as jquery etc from your blog; it grabs it from googles CDN. So less resource usage on your end and most likely faster (as well as optimized).[Though be vary; some countries block google and therefore your site may be unusable if this situation occurs]

I aim to optimize the full structure of the blog DB/ Files and all soon; though it may not be soaring through the sky at the moment but its good enough for now :p

Speaking of speed also check out Rarst’s Firefox and Opera Test.

Fire – Burn that only which you can afford to do so

Making Money With Adsense

Now in parasite hosting post I mentioned Courts’ Hub page experiment; Well its good to see the results are now out and …money was made, how ever was it worth the effort? Week 4 figure shows that the hub pages made $165 (rounded up) so $165/100 = $1.65 per hub in the week so about $0.24 per day.

The trend was that the income about doubled every week. So going with this growth figure they should be making about $0.48 per day now, making about $15 a month each.

Now that is not a small amount but I wonder if it could be utilized further?

Forest Parks from Real Blogging tips has recently been blogging on his adsense case study to make $5 a day.

My point being if we could base 10 sites around the hub page content (10 hubs = 1 site) would it be more profitable? Could we add a ‘0′ to the end of the above figure?

Well as I argued in the post the reason these hubs are making money is due to the high authority nature of hub pages itself and therefore those posts and efforts if done on a site would not garner the same results. (Theoretically of course)

So if not that method; how far would it be possible to leverage those money making hubs as link building assets to a related niche site with a similar aim as Forests?

This would involve adding ‘author’ links etc such as in article directory linkbuilding. This would be unobtrusive and help your ‘main’ site rank. Thus enabling you to earn from (hopefully) The site at no1 position in serps and the hub page at no2 (and your other parasite pages at 3/4/5 etc).

This would be an interesting experiment to do… and I may just do it if time permits.

On that note I leave you for this week! Show that you are not selfish as Ajith suggest and leave a comment while enjoying a bit of Jackson!

Thanks for the link love and great compilation of links (and a bit of tribute to MJ :) )

      Hey donace,
Thanks for the link love…and this post is a great example of how link love can be still given via a great post and not a bullet point list.

Cheers and I do miss the moonwalker (only for Billie Jean where he’s original – with skin as well – and not for his other numbers)

        Thanks for link!

btw I hadn’t seen much benefit from DB Cache, maybe my config is not too database intensive. I use Hyper Cache for static caching and it works awesome. I like it much more than more hyped WP Super Cache.

@ Michael NP glad it was of use.

@ Ajith; Yep while the bullet point form is useful I never did like it as it didnt give enough information. I find writing it like this a) better SEO for the out going link b) doesnt seem like a link farm and pitches the links better!

and yes, Billie Jean (the best song by him?) truly is great!

@ Rarst NP man, I had issues wit hyper cache also, hoping a full file rebuild will solve the issues I’m having! But surely DB Cache even if it reduces your SQL Query time my a small percentage (less cpu usage / generation time) it is still beneficial. As while Hyper/Super etc cache a static Html there are some queries that still need to be executed, and if these are cache able….would be useful.

Thanks for the link and I’m glad you liked the post :-) Sorry your vacation is over.

Have you heard of or read the book Daemon by Daniel Suarez? The death of a brilliant programmer sets off a series of programs that take down parts of the Internet and cause all kinds of problems due to a daemon and a trojan. What the death of MJ did to the internet reminded me of that book.

Man, you are inspiring me to post some new “link-love”-style posts myself. I started last year with a “speed linkin’” post, but haven’t made time for any follow-ups. These types of posts are important from time to time, so thanks for keeping them going here at The Nexus.

Thanks again for the opportunity to guest post, Donace — much appreciated :)

@kim I’m sorry its over as well :p
No I haven’t read that book and will check it out.

@ Jeff Glad I inspired you again! I recall that speed link post…it was after my first ‘update – link – love’ post :p

My last such post was in Feb so thought It’s not a weekly feature like I hoped so lets make an appearance with it now!

And thank you for writing the guest post; was a great read and got some great traffic to it also.

Thanks for the link love, Donace, and the video. I was looking like crazy for more Michael Jackson videos last Thursday, but at the time the embed was removed from all of them. Thanks for the video memory also.

Great set of links. and good way to give link love. I think this is better than my way of giving link love Friday Night Link Party :)

                        What do you think?

each method has its merits. I prefer this as its more or less my thought process and it ‘looks’ better to me then a huge list. Plus it has more semantic SEO relevance imo.

What a great article, I love the creativity behind how you put it together from top to bottom, it’s my first time here so if it’s a “norm” than wow.

I do want to touch on the Michael Jackson thing for a second as well, (again musical genius) but it annoyed the crap out of me seeing the ridiculous news coverage today surrounding the death of Michael Jackson, meanwhile the US soldier that the Taliban claims to have gets 5 lines in the local paper. Crazy.

Hey John thanks for dropping by and thanks for the compliment!

In regards to Jackson the bottom line is that news reports what sells. He is a big selling point soldiers captured are not. The ‘bottom line’ is the profit ‘bottom line’.

End of the day media is a lucrative business and they want to make as much money as possible…telling real news that makes no money…hey…they have 4 lines for that if your lucky :p

There is also a point about the media influencing thought process and manipulating views /clouding the truth….but that path is a very long and dubious one and might make me sound a bit paranoid!

My pleasure on commenting, and your right on the money it’s all about how much possible cash can be leeched off of MJ before it burns out.
