Update – Links – Love – 4
Due to the ever closing exams I didn’t have time to polish of my draft articles; so it is time again for a Update – Links – Love post!
The Moolah
Revenue Roundup
I have nothing much to show about my earning from this blog; however the recession does not seem to have hit the blogosphere as can bee seen by Binary Data’s Round Up of figures.
Arbitrage Conspiracy
A lot of you (if you’re on any mailing list) have heard of the ‘Arbitrage Conspiracy’ and while my local forum Wickedfire has been condemning the program from day one; Warrior has followed suit and holes are appearing in VERY expensive program. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Make Money From Domain Names
However do not lose hope, all good things come to hose who wait…but if you can’t wait have a look at Lord B’s latest study on how to make money from domain names. Note this is a draft so keep an eye out for an updated version on his blog.
Automated Video Sites Case Study
My post on Automated Video Sites seemed to be garning some decent traffic. Though as any true IM’er will tell you, never take the authors word for it. So I invite you to have a look at Spoonitnow’s Casestudy in which he is detailing his experience with this method. [NSFW] (note the post has been updated).
Adgitize Update
Speaking of reviews and my experience I recently talked about Adgitize in Adgitize – A critical look and since then while cutting back an extraordinary amount I am happy to say I am still get a few dollars from them, so for a high page view / traffic side I recommend trialling a 125*125 for a month.
Where’s My Screwdriver (or security)
Blacklist Update
You have heard me bang on about the power of your htaccess file and in Spam Attack I have stated that I used a modified version of the ‘3G blacklist’ by Jeff.
Well his older, bigger, badder, more secure older brother is due soon and with this in mind, Jeff has started a series of posts explaining the inner workings of this new blacklist.
Spam Case Study Update
Moving quickly on to my follow up study (Oh Spammer Spam ME!!!) I am happy to say while according to Bad Behaviour and Server logs ‘potential spam’ did increase by a whopping 20% all of it seemed to have been stopped even entering the site.
The ones that did make it through Askimet intervened and spammed 32 comments in its queue. Overall that’s still a brilliant result
Though the point standing BB plugin, the 3G blacklist, and Askimet can stop well 99.9999999*% spam!
Wordpress Exploit Scanner Update
From spam protection to site protection Blogs Security has released a new version of their wordpress exploit scanner. So give it a shot make sure you are secure!
The Big Bad Google and Human Rights
Lastly moving on to Human Rights, In early December DK1 wrote an article titled: Information Superpower, based on the amount of information Google has on all of us and how it was or could be exploited, and even breach some fundamental rights.
Earlier in the week though Google announced this gem. It is basically tracking you via your mobile over google maps.
The “opt-in” Latitude service uses data from mobile phone masts, GPS, or wi-fi hardware to update a user’s location automatically.
of course raises HUGE privacy issues and well…read on:
Google says it has build the service from the ground up with security and privacy issues in mind, and that the service only stores the last known location of a given user.
However, privacy watchdog Privacy International argues that there are opportunities for abuse of the system for those who may not know that their phone is broadcasting its location.
Another way to track; another possibility of abuse…is google nearing the ‘Eagle Eye’ stage as was advocated in ‘Information Superpower’ comments? Is it time for an uprising against the Tyrant of Old ? (check out the non-fic story by sire -ed)
Legalease
Copyright and Fairuse
This has been a topic that has been cropping up recently. I have talked about copyright and its bonuses in a commercial aspect before.
However recently New York Times and Gatehouse Media have been at each other in regards of copyright and fairuse policy:
The lawsuit from Gatehouse, filed just before Christmas argued that The New York Times Co, through the Boston Globe (Boston.com) violated copyright law by copying headlines and the first sentence from articles in the Newton Tab, Daily News Tribune of Waltham, and other GateHouse papers. GateHouse also claims illegal use of trademarks as Boston.com also named the papers when linking to them.
Now I am no expert in these matters but surely by NY Times by copying only the headline and first sentence of the story and even accrediting it to GateHouse would surely fit into ‘FairUse’ definition.
NYTimes settled out of court for in my opinion purely business PR related reasons. It has also been mooted that another reason behind this was the fear of a negative precedent (read ruling / legal grounds) that would state aggregation sites were actually in breach of copyright therefore making this profitable business model illegal in effect.
Article Theft
Moving from a possible copyright infringement to a definite one; the blogosphere has been recently talking about article theft. This IS plain and simply copyright infringement unless they have your permission to copy it.
If this has happened to you I suggest you check out Lorelle post on this; this is the most in depth and step by step post I have seen on this topic to date.
Contests Galore
I was looking at the horizon one day and saw a shadowy figure, he passed by leaving all in awe….the prodigal son had returned.
Big Ben Patton is back and with a vengeance and a killer plan to kick start his blog. His contest is one with an interesting twist and well go check it out!
Give to charity like a river…always flowing, always supplying, giving life, giving wealth.
The latest Net Fool Contest promises to be one to watch; the bottom line being it helps both you the entrant and the people who truly need help.
The Big Mak Contest also has started in which he is giving away $180, 100K EC, ad spots, domain, hosting and a special prize. A nice simple contest worth a look!
Wandering thoughts
Well to add what didn’t fit elsewhere!
SEO Challenge ‘09: has been progressing without me; I have attempted to make links to some of my newer posts namely Free SEO Tools and Rapidshare Search Engines. which is gaining me some traffic, however having a quick look at the Scorecard I have a Loooooooong way to go.
My OIOPublisher deal in OIOPublisher ONLY $27! has now ended though once Simon sends over some new vouchers I will update the offer to an even better one!
That is all! Let me know what you think about this weeks going ons, is google overstepping boundaries? Is the Arbitrage Conspiracy actually good? Is your spam protection effective? and is Ben truly back with a bang? Is it wise that I am now on twitter? and will my upcoming law related posts be useful?!
Over to you!

A nice and informative round up. Thanks. It beats me how you can keep in touch with so many things!
Thanks for dropping by; its the magic of 45min commutes to and from uni coupled with email subscriptions…not to mention the metro newspaper
Another excellent round-up, Donace! So much good stuff to read and learn it makes my head spin. Or maybe that’s from the handful of Vicodin I had for breakfast. Either way, thanks for the link-love on the Blacklist — always appreciated!
forget Vicodin Jeff and get some sleep instead…works much better
and no problem…looking forward to testing out and breaking the new blacklist.
wooooowwwwww, i’m overwhelmed just by reading and looking at your site. mad props for being able to keep up with everything and basically keep up with what you’re doing.
i didn’t get a chance to really look deep into what you’re doing, but i’ve bookmarked this so when i get home im definitely looking at this again haha
thanks for dropping by; looking forward to hear your thoughts once you have a read then
Thanks for the link. And I am amazed at the amount of reading you have managed to do. Have bookmarked the page. Will be going through each one of them.
Hey man, Nice set of link love. Will check the links. I am happy that i am in that binary data’s link.
I hope you add any of my blog link in your next update links love…
will do Nihar;)
Man, this is a huge post with a lot of info, it may have been an idea to break it up into smaller posts, to make it easier for lazy bloggers such as myself.
In regards to the revenue roundup, it would have been very interesting to see the page views for ClickforNick to see if there was a formula we could use to determining the average click ratio per page views.
Well I can’t really break down a weekly roundup any further can I :p What can I say A LOT happens during a week!
Though yes it would be interesting to to see Nicks traffic stats…as his adsense figure is ridiculously high.
I suppose, seeing as how you put it that way. Damn, it sure puts a lot of pressure on slow readers such as myself who have to break things down into smaller digestible pieces. Damn, must be something due to me passing the 50 mark last year. I think Mitch is right behind me, but then I can’t see him running into the same problem.
lol its because I bore easy and assimilate information quick…the only reason i’m ahead! plus I
cannot churn out great content every day like you so we’ll call it even!
Yes Sire, I’m right behind you, but I’m reading all day, and I also speed read and have pretty good comprehension. So, you’ll have to stick with being the beauty and allow me to be the brains for awhile. LOL
First, the GateHouse people are morons, and I’d almost wish no one would write about them because they deserve to have their site wither up and float away.
Second, “Click for Nick” had a fantastic month, and as someone who’s never heard of him, I’m going to go lurking to see what kinds of things he’s writing about to be generating that kind of income.
Third, Arbitrage Conspiracy? I went to the Warrior Forum, but I must have missed something in the beginning because I don’t get it, and don’t know anything about it. For a usually well informed guy like myself, that’s almost embarrassing.
I never did get Gatehouses motivation, they got traffic and seo benefits from the new aggregation, why jeopardize that for what probably is a fraction of possible income earned from the relationship.
Click for Nick he HAS had interesting figures; looking at his content I see similar content around; so I put it down to placement and melding of the ads. Personally I’ve had a look at his placement and would never do that as I feel it is slightly ‘in the way’ but if he makes more money in a month then most minimum wage people do…power to him!
The Arbitrage Conspiracy was/is basically a coaching program that cost I think about 10k that would teach you how to make money via ‘arbitrage’. Though all they seem to be saying is buy loads of keywords in adwords, see which work for a landing page and then see how cheap you can get it … which for a 10k program is like saying …here is football…go score. You dont know the rules as such and what it is to ’score’.
Have a read of that thread in warrior, they explain it in more detail then I do.
I actually did read the thread, trying to figure it all out, but for the most part they skirted around what the issue really was, which was why I stayed confused. And, come on, $10K? Man, for that kind of money they have to come to my house, show me in person, and sit there until I make at least my first $1,000 online. Wow!
The main issue was they paid 10k, what they were advised to do was arguably what you should NOT
do and they were not making money and would not be for a while!
Hi, i’ve subscribe to your blog through Makoy’s Contest.

sweet; thanks for dropping by!
Oh Donace, I was quite confused by your homepage.. Maybe you could change your fonts alittle? Make your title and content more obvious
Actually I am fine with the whole theme Donace. I don’t find it confusing at all. The posts stand out because of the blocked coloring around the titles, and it all loads extremely quickly. As this is obviously an important issue perhaps some of your other commentators could give their views on the subject.
Hey Ben; perhaps you could give a more detailed reason why it was confusing? The orange bars I feel give an obvious highlight of the posts titles.
The only real ‘issue’ I have is my logo….its not there yet i’m still using the default one :p
Well you said you didn’t have time for a post but your weekly round-up had more in it some all of my posts for most weeks. Not last week though cause I did a lot of work
But weekly rounds ups are faster and easier to type then my posts…my posts usually take a little but of thinking and planning :p…for these I just look at all my ’starred’ emails in my inbox that I marked for detailed reading and shove them in a post :p
Yes I recall your wordpress threaded comment ones…brilliant stuff… i’ve actually saved that on my ‘wordpress folder’ ..its the one I use when planning my next big idea that will not see light!
The post is very informative and rich in content,it takes much time to read it till the end and I think it is not a drawback,I visited it twice.I consider your homepage to be orginal.I like oranges very much and find the orange bars beautiful and symbolic. In Feng Shui oranges are symbols of gold and money ,so they do special work here. They do special matter.
really gold an money?….better keep it then! :p thanks for he great comments and dropping by more than once!
