My need for speed – Go faster stripes

If you have had a look at the main site you would have most likely spotted my 14 ways to speed up Joomla.

Since writing that article i haven’t really had the time to further optimize the main site or this blog on the word press format, but just because i have been idle it does not mean so has everyone else.

So firstly Pagecache; it was point four in the list and i had put heavy credence on it. I am personally using Pagecache 2.0 in the ‘file’ method and i can see how well it has been working. For a little bit of proof on its effectiveness Ircmaxell did a small benchmark, consisting of No Pagecache, 1.09 and v2.0.

As you can see with it enabled you have effectively doubled the amount of pages you can dispense. A closer look also reveals that using optimized code caches further increases the effectiveness of the component.

The next follow on question then asks if we want to use an OPcode cache which is better?

Looking at the first graph we can see that v1.09 with APC is the most effective yet its margin with its nearest competitor is not great.

Leading on from this we can see another benchmark by Ircmaxell that compares the three big Opcode caches with none at all. (note these were done in joomla 1.5.1 as apposed to 1.0.14 of the earlier test).

Looking at the graph we can see that with any of the three enabled we get a boost of about 50%.

The graph also shows unlike the previous benchmark that eAccelerator is the faster choice by about 5%.

So we can see that caching truly is a beneficial method to use to speed up your website. Though do remember that the opcache methods usd 1gb in the tests so you need a decent server if you wish to run these. APC can be downloaded here and eAccelerator here.

I will end this then by saying caching is a brilliant boost to performance boost to site may they be joomla based or any other. Irc also wrote this small piece on speeding up a php site in general. I will be going over my template and implementing these to see if i see any difference though i suspect it would need to be implemented in the core for maximum effect.
