Keyword Research with Market Samurai
Niches come in as many flavours as Ben and Jerrys ice-cream. Macro/Micro/Super Micro Niches even all require good research for you to find that traffic and ultimately sales driving traffic.
Picking the right keyword
Picking the niche
Now normally we pick a ‘theme’ keyword before we actually pick a niche keyword. A example of a theme keyword being ‘Saxophone’ and a niche being ‘Tenor Saxophone’.
However in the example I will be working with today I am basing it on a product namely this and therefore our main keyword is already picked for us, namely ‘Mafia Wars’
Finding a Micro Niche
Now I am no wordsmith and so I will only define a Micro Niche as a ‘niche within a niche’. So in the ‘Tenor Saxophone’ niche a possible micro niche could be ‘Tenor Saxophone Playing Guide’ etc etc.
So what we do with Market Samurai is fire it up and type in ‘Mafia Wars’ as the main keyword and we’ll eventually get here:
You will note that I have ticked both ‘Google Synonym tool’ and ‘Google search keywords’. This is to get as many keywords as possible from Google that IT thinks is related to Mafia Wars and hopefully some of those juicy ‘Long Tail’ keywords everyone talks about.
You will also note that I have also elected to display traffic that has a minimum SEO traffic of 50, this is because we dont want to get / work for keywords that look great but don’t actually have any traffic.
Filtering Keywords
-
Manual Review:
While Google is great is spitting out keywords it doesn’t always get the niche spot on. So some time times we have to manually go though it all and filter out some of the obviously unrelated keywords.
-
Filters ON!
We want to now set a minimum ’standard’ and set up the filters so it would only require targeted content and some links to get in to the top 10.

What I set the filters to above was:
- Search Traffic min: 50
- PBR (Phrase to Broad Ratio): 10
- SEOC (SEO Comp): 100k
-SETOC (SEO Title Comp) : 10k
I had also set the match type to ‘exact’ however you can have it set to ‘broad’ to see further keywords that will show up with amendments. An example beingĀ ‘Mafia Wars Items’ which fit the broad criteria but not exact. What this meant in effect was that not a lot of searches come for ‘Mafia Wars items’ itself however those three words were in larger phrases such as ‘Mafia wars items cuba’ or used in longer search strings etc etc.
However keeping it simple and running with the ‘exact’ filter there was only one keyword left, namely ‘Mafia Wars Collections’ which promises a nice 95 searches a day and not a lot of competition at all.
The final hurdle
All that is required now is to plonk that keyword in a post permalink and make it the post title (or a domain name) and write some relevant content and throw links at it. You should be ranking and making money in no time!
Results
Well I threw a few links at the post I wrote and …:
That is the amount of hits it has got from SE’s today and there are still about 12 hours left in the day!
Sales wise its been doing about 1 a week on the click bank account I opened for this experiment. Which considering all I have done is plonk a small line and picture at the bottom of the post I think is pretty good.
So this keyword research that took me just over 10mins to do added with another maybe 30mins writing researching and throwing some links at it is now making me a sweet $100+ a month. This is with it being no 4 for the keyword and no blatant push for the book. If I had set up its own domain with the main keyword in the domain (Mafia Wars) I would be able to capitalise on this by writing on those other keywords and making that $100 in to a bit more!
Note I used the paid version of MS for this guide however you can grab a free trial from here and remember the keyword module is ALWAYS free so just grab it

I just got Market Samurai last week and I’m still working on figuring out how to use it properly. This will definitely help, thanks! Can you explain the difference between SEOC and SETOC? I’m still a little confused about that… But I like your experiment, you make it look so easy to make an extra $100/month. If it takes under an hour to do that, you could replicate this process 5 times every day for a week and you’ll be earning around $2,500/month for just a week’s worth of work. Not bad at all

Yep it does seem easy in theory though some times the data does not match up the with reality or the end product just doesnt sell as well as we hope! though if this coninues to make $100 a month i’ll be happy!
SEOC= Seo competition this is essentially results in google for your “keyword” example :
http://www.google.com/search?q=“mafia wars collections”&btnG=Search&meta=15&filter=0&num=10&start=0&safe=off&gl=US&hl=en
SEOTC = SEO title comeptition, which is number of sites that have the keywords in the title.
http://www.google.com/search?q=allintitle:+mafia +wars +collections&btnG=Search&meta=15&filter=0&num=10&start=0&safe=off&gl=US&hl=en
That is a quick check to see competition though I suggest you give the keyword a quick check in the ’seo competetion’ moodule as well to see how it maps out there.
Thanks for the clarifications. Yeah, as long as it makes some sort of money, even if it’s not as much money as you hoped, it’s still a solid strategy. Good luck!
I bet it would really pay off to have a really powerful blog that could dominate any keywords you write about.

I just noticed that the comments link to: http://thenexus.tk/keyword-research-market-samurai/?cid=4183
Is that on purpose or just a bug?
Hey Emma thanks for dropping by; no that is not a bug its due to ’super comments’ Plugin; it works out more beneficial (imo) for commentators as it creates a unique page for each commenter and all your comments link back to it creating your own ‘profile’ here! and the more you comment the stronger your comment page and the stronger the link back to your site.
Thank you for the tip. I just started an website using the micro niche, and it’s taking me a while to understand how to drive traffic to it.
I think the CTR is also very high if we use the relevant micro topic and kepp updating the site.
Thanks for the tips, MS is a very powerful piece of software but it has a keen learning curve
The SEOTCR is VERY useful as it can give you a depiction of how fierce the competition is for that keyword. The lower the percentage the better. Keep dominating those niches! HeavyDollars
