How to convert XviD/DivX/AVI to DVD using DVD2SVCD

Posted on May 31st, 2008 by in How to, Ripping and Converting

This is a tutorial on how to convert XviD/DivX/AVI to
DVD using DVD2SVCD, CCE and some DVD author.

Required apps

DVD2SVCD

CinemaCraft Encoder

Some DVD author (you may use any)

Step 1: Configuring all the
settings

When you install DVD2SVCD you get a bunch of other applications
like AviSynth, VStrip, BeSweet etc. so you don’t have to get
anything else. Now let’s start with all the settings.

Open up DVD2SVCD and ignore the pop-up message saying you should
use the default settings if this is the first time you use the app.

Then open the Misc tab. In the Input file type select AVI
and in Output file type select DVD. It should look like this:

Then click on the Default Output Folder button and choose Set
default output folder. Browse to any folder you want, just make
sure it has enough free disc space (around 5GB should be enough).
Also set the DVD2SVCD Level to Advanced, some necessary features
may be prohibited if you use Normal mode.

Now head over to the Conversion tab.

To the right in the AVI File field there’s a browse button, click
it and browse to the AVI you want to convert. Next, click the Go!
button and then choose Preview video (still picture). This will
show you how the final video will look. If you’re video somehow is
interlaced (only occurs on nuked releases), you can choose to
Deinterlace it. You can do that by choosing one of the deinterlace
methods from the Deinterlace dropdown menu (I’ve never had to use
deinterlacing on AVI source). One thing you need to worry about
here is the aspect ratio. Somehow it gets the AR settings wrong
when you load your AVI, so you’ll need to change between the 3
formats in order to get the desired aspect ratio. Just remember how
the video should look and choose the correct AR settings.

You’ll also see that under Selected Audiotracks there’s now one
track, and it says which format it is in. Depending on the format
we maybe don’t have to reencode the audio (e.g if the source is
AC3). As far as I know there’s no use in specifying which language
the track is in (if it’s AC3 it may be set to the correct language
but not on MP3 sound).

Note: You need to specify the path to your encoder before
you open your source file in the Conversion tab, you specify
the path in the Encoder tab.

Now it’s time to set up the Audio settings. Go to the Audio
tab and have a look at it.

If your source was AC3 then just check Do not convert audio (use
source audio). What is does is pretty selfexplaning. However if
your source is MP3 (which is quite likely), you’ll need to
reencode it to MP2 (of course you could reencode it to AC3 too but
this program doesn’t support that). I don’t think you’ll need to
change any settings here, just make sure Stereo is selected under
Output mode. Choose whatever bitrate you want, although 224 is
pretty minimum.

Next tab to go to is the Encoder tab.

Here you can choose between 4 encoders, although it’s recommended
that you use Cinema Craft Encoder. Specify the path to the encoder
and then there’s only one setting you may have to change, the
Video encoding mode. If you’re movie is short (less or equal than
90 minutes), you can safely use CBR without loosing any quality
compared to VBR. If your movie is longer than that I recommend
using VBR. In the Number of passes field enter how many passes it
should encode. 3 is enough in almost every case, choose 4 or 5 if
you want to but IMO this is quite unnecessary as the source isn’t
of top quality.

Now it’s time to setup the Bitrate. Go to the Bitrate tab.

Max. : Should be set to 9400 for maximum quality.

Min. : Should be set to 0 (300 or 500 is also OK but I don’t see
why not to use 0)

Min avg. : Set it to anything, it isn’t too important for this
kind of conversion.

Max avg. : Set it high, like Min avg. it isn’t too important for
this kind of conversion.

CD Size: This is the most important one. Using a too high number
here will result in oversized movies. The default of 4464 MB should
be fine, I’ve set it to 4450 to be on the safe side.

Now to the last tab, the DVD Image tab.

As DVD2SVCD only supports Sonic Scenarist and DVD Author as
authoring programs you may want to choose No Images. This will able
you to import all files to your favorite authoring program and make
a nice little menu there. However if you have Scenarist (2.7) and
want DVD2SVCD to author it automatically for you, all you need to
do is enter all the info in the fields and choose how many chapter
points you want to add.

The following tabs don’t need to be touched:

Finalize

About

Log

AVI Hints

Pulldown (PAL users NEVER even have to look at this tab)

Subtitles

Step 2: Hitting the Go!
button

Now that you have all settings configured correctly, all you need
to do is go to the Conversion tab and hit Go! and then Start
conversion. The log will then open and you can see what is going on
at the moment. After the conversion has finished it’ll say
Conversion done!.

This guide may seem very complicated but once you’ve configured
everything once you don’t have to touch almost anything. And once
you start to know what all the settings do you don’t need any
guides like this anymore.

A thing that seems to happen to many users is bad sync on your
final multiplexed movie. This could be due to bad muxing, so if you
get desynced movies, try using the .MPV and .MPA/AC3 when you do
the authoring. The audio should be synced then, ’cause no audio
delay correction is made when BeSweet converts the audio to MP2 and
the video always remains the same as the source (only in different
format). If you still have sync problems it might be that your
sources is screwed up aswell or some codec problems (quite
unlikely).
