A view for ado

The Nexus has been in swing from about 2 months now and the few odd people that have found this corner I would like to say thanks for coming. :D

I thought as I have officially labelled the nexus as a Blog so I may as well ‘blog’. For me means keeping a small journal of what happening with this site and where I want it to go, plus some raving rants along the way.

So first what have I done so far? I initially started the site with Mambo as I had and most likely still don’t have much html, css php etc experience. After a bit of time with Google I found that joomla was the kid of mambo and better at its job then its old man.

As I had not done much I jumped ship and got Joomla up and running; I was donated Versatility III a colleague and it looked great so it became the basis of my site.

Now when playing around with the site; throwing in different components and modules and just experimenting, one thing I did find though was that the site was a bit slow in loading so I got Google out again and I found a few hints and tips to speed things up such as caching function in joomla.

Even after this and only about 15 visitors a day I had the need for speed; a friend recommended firebug add-on for Firefox with this and WSO; I got the load times from 16+seconds to a cool 3.30 seconds!

My next tweaking expedition with the site was to do with the .htaccess which was mainly due to the fact that Artio SEO was not working. (And is broken again now: p).

In my travels what I did find was this site. With the knowledge from here I went forth on my expedition and played around a bit: D

Lastly now I think I’m fixed on the categories of content there will be on the site, though I may muck about with ‘joke’ categories in an attempt to make it a bit ‘future proof’.

I also plan to bring the arcade back in a few months as soon as I retest and reupload the games, and the big thing upgrade to joomla 1.5; though I will wait probably wait till the migration is easier.

If you have any suggestions let me know! and lastly a shout out to ‘Tom who endures my nagging and helps out a lot, ‘Z for helping me make the site more bug free and for all his hints and tips and lastly but not least to PJ and crew for hosting the site for me.
